This volume comprises 197 taxa of Guinean plants included in 15 families, from Flagellariaceae to Typhaceae according the classification proposed by Takhtajan in 1997 in his Diversity and Classification of Flowering Plants.

Accepted name, synonyms, type, habitat, distribution, high quality scan and a sketch map are included for each species growing in the country. Specially diverse are Gramineae, the fourth most abundant family within the angiosperms with close to 820 genera and more than 12000 species. Doubtless this is the most important plant family in global economy.

The Flora of Equatorial Guinea project progresses now presenting the second volume of the 3 dedicated to monocots. In this 197 Guinean species are included. They are comprised in 15 families, from Flagellariaceae to Typhaceae, following proposed classification by Takhtajan in 1997, in its "Diversity and Classification of Flowering Plants".

In this volume, heterogeneous necessarily to include up to 12 different orders according Takhtajan, they highlight the Gramineae, fourth most diverse within angiosperms, with c. 820 genera and over 12,000 species described, and certainly the most important botanical family in the global economy.

Some minor modifications to the text format have been realized as a result of the difficulties and complexities of the usual editorial process. Since the development of the project website (www.floradeguinea.com) makes it possible. We firmly intend to actively develop a system for online publication which would give greater flexibility and continuity to our work. Each family, once completed, will be available on-line so that neither authors nor users will have to wait an entire volume is available and printed for use the information.

The National Plan for Scientific Research, Development and Technological Innovation of the Ministry of Science and Technology first, then Education and Science and of Science and Innovation and currently of Economy and Competitiveness financed the first steps of this Flora (REN2002-01129 / GLO , CGL2005-03990 / BOS, CGL2006-01223 / BOS, CGL2009-07405), and we will fund up to December 31, 2015 through CGL2012-32934 project.

The support of the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation, in particular the Spanish Cultural Center in Malabo, is still essential for our task. We have recently collaborated in preparing a monographic calendar on the Ferns of Equatorial Guinea. The library of the aforementioned Cultural Center makes accessible all our jobs to their final recipients, all Guineans.

It is essential to the continued involvement of the National University of Equatorial Guinea. Maximiliano Fero that since last year is Director of Research at the University, is fully involved in all the tasks, not just administrative of the project in Equatorial Guinea. His predecessor, Mr. Eulogio Abeso, until recently Prime Minister of Cooperation in the Embassy of Equatorial Guinea in Madrid, was added to the list of "essential employees" and has solved quite a few logistical problems.

The aim of this work is to facilitate the identification of native or naturalized vascular plants growing in Equatorial Guinea. The balance between the status of floristic knowledge of a country like Equatorial Guinea and the need to develop a flora which might serve as a useful tool, prompted us to consider as an essential element of this work that the keys include all of the species whose presence has been reported in neighboring countries: Cameroon (Cam), Gabon (Gab) or São Tomé and Príncipe (ST), as they might appear within the area under study. We include 145 taxa known in the Gulf of Biafra from the countries around Equatorial Guinea, but for which, to date, no samples have been found in our territory (104 from Cameroon, 61 from Gabon, 12 from São Tomé and 1 from Príncipe). As in the former 3 volumes these are not numbered in the keys nor is any information about them included. For the Gramineae, we have follow the same criterion used in the Leguminosae, and therefore we have include in the keys those taxa cited in neigbouring countries to a distance of less than 150 km from the Equatorial Guinea borders.

It is surprising that several families widespread in tropical aquatic environments are still uncollected in Equatorial Guinea, perhaps the case of Najadaceae is the most remarkable, with 8 species in Cameroon and still unknown in Gabon, Equatorial Guinea and São Tomé and Príncipe. It would not be surprising, therefore, that in short time the number of species would be altered. We find in this aspect one more argument in favor of a more responsive online publications system.

Modern floras can not run apart from the numerous advances produced in plant systematics these days, therefore we are obliged to consider these new criteria somehow. Since reorganizing the entire flora would be meaningless, we have decided to include in this volume and from now on in every publication related to the Flora of Equatorial Guinea, the family proposed by the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group, APG III (Reveal & Chase, 2011) in cases which deviates from the Takhtajan’s taxonomic criteria. In our opinion it is the best solution to preserve the overall coherence of the work and so we made already in the catalogue of Annobón (Velayos & al., 2014). The adscription at the level of genera follows The Families and Genera of Vascular Plants (Kubitzki, 1998), but in grasses, still not published in that book. For Gramineae we follow Clayton & Renvoize (1986) Genera Graminum. Genera and species within each family are organized alphabetically.

This volume is the first in the collection lacking a preliminary checklist published, therefore some of the species are actually new records for the country, and we have indicated this matter in each case when required. In the present work, the specimens that are mentioned in the text refer only to few testimonies per province; this is complemented by a complete list of collections at the end of the work. Complete information for each collection is available at: floradeguinea.bioucm.es/herbario.
